A traditional string instrument with its origins in southern Italy, the eight stringed instruments really became popular in Western Europe and North America at the start of the 20^th century. Present in different types of jazz, bluegrass, country, folk even pop and rock genres, the mandolin may look sort of like a guitar but it presents unique challenges that are specific to its shape and size.
