A traditional string instrument with its origins in southern Italy, the eight stringed instruments really became popular in Western Europe and North America at the start of the 20th century. Present in different types of jazz, bluegrass, country, folk even pop and rock genres, the mandolin may look sort of like a guitar but it presents unique challenges that are specific to its shape and size.
