Galamian's Attitude Toward Playing the Violin

Ivan Galamian believed in the most physiologically natural form of violin playing and performance.  A bright pedagogue and a brilliant master of the art, Galamian said in his book, Principles of Violin Playing and Teaching that "Naturalness should be [the teacher's] guiding principle. 'Right' is only what is natural for the particular student, for only what is natural is comfortable and efficient."  He also suggested teachers not make overly strict rules but instead flexible guidings that allow for the uniqueness each person.  He said that it is a bad idea to prioritize the rules over the students, making them inferior by some ghastly notion.  I run my studio on the grounds of the Galamian method in the sense that we study the science and art of playing the violin yet accomidate the specific spiritual, emotional, mental and physical features of everyone who steps in our doors!

Suzuki's 'Every Child Can' Approach

More than fifty years ago, Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki realized the implications of the fact that children the world over learn to speak their native language with ease. He began to apply the basic principles of language acquisition to the learning of music, and called his method the mother-tongue approach. The ideas of parent responsibility, loving encouragement, constant repetition, etc., are some of the special features of the Suzuki approach.

The early years are crucial for developing mental processes and muscle coordination. Listening to music should begin at birth; formal training may begin at age three or four, but it is never too late to begin.
